What anime are you watching this season? (Spring 2023)
-
@K-O Nice! AMB moving up then, for sure! I have seen Chainsaw Man and I'm looking forward to next season (surprised to hear some people were disappointed); for the record, my post only had the stuff that's coming out this season, but I'm definitely still:
- Watching Inuyasha: Just watched Ep.54, first movie is up next. So far so alright, it's a bit dated, but I know a lot of it is my bias; it's still perfectly enjoyable, just an outdated art-style and pace, but I'm thinking amazing for the time.
- Watching random shows on my list that Hulu tells me it has (recently S3 of Danmachi and now S2 of Arifureta).
@AGreaterMonster Steins;Gate is GOD tier. I'm a bit of an anime noob, but it's definitely in my top 10 (along with S1 of OPM, which you mentioned). Psycho-Pass is 100% in my short list of what to watch next; I got stunlocked because of the two versions (I heard the Extended one is better, but usually when I'm in an anime mood, I don't want to watch 40+ minute episodes ).
Gundam is just terrifying and there's too much of it. I think I need to ease myself into different Mecha ones before I can do a deep dive (I've only watched Code Geass and Gurren Lagann of the big ones; and dropped Eureka Seven 16 eps in ). Gungrave looks interesting, but the animation style can be such a barrier that I don't want to force it while I'm also binging Inuyasha
-
@Mariano Code Geass was awesome! Really smart writing. You're right Steins;Gate was world class.
A few other favorites of mine that come to mind include: Black Lagoon, Platinum End, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Parasyte: The Maxim, ID: Invaded and Ergo Proxy.
-
HUGE Chainsaw Man fan here! I also checked out the new Trigun anime - I think it was really well done but I wasn't terribly keen on some of the changes (MILLY????). Now I'm just eagerly awaiting the upcoming Uzumaki anime.
-
@Mariano I am going retro. My new paramour has never seen all the way through Yu Yu Hakusho and I feel this is a slight against my soul. So I'm going to make him watch it during all our rainy days.
Ergo Proxy is definitely one of my favorites. I struggle to enjoy certain anime when they put in too many fan service scenes personally. One anime that I was weirdly surprised by was Fruits Basket, the real one, with 4 seasons. Not that half baked one they released like 20 years ago. -

It doesn't get high ratings, but I think that's because it's so unique and requires a certain sensibility to appreciate it. It has such a deep, surreal atmosphere.

@SwampCreature I'm trying Chainsaw Man too. It's pretty fun, but it bothers me every time that the open credits music starts out as a ripoff of a Fugazi song. It diverges, but the beginning....Listen to the opening of this song then the beginning of the Chainsaw Man opening credits: Youtube Video
-
@AGreaterMonster Wow, I never put that together before but you're totally right! That riff is so legendary I'm surprised I didn't catch it.
-
@AGreaterMonster I haven't watched any of the rest of your favorites! I'll have to check them out (though some are admittedly in my Plan-To-Watch list which just grows longer and longer ) Some 9+/10s for me include: Cowboy Bebop, Angel Beats!, Log Horizon S1, Dr. Stone S1, and Death Note (this last one is just insanely nostalgic and so easy to watch for anime noobs like I am, but also was in 2009 when I first saw it)
@SwampCreature Uzumaki sounds so good! I usually try to stay away from scary stuff but I feel like I have to make an exception for Junji Ito
@Ezra Yooo, I have to watch Yu Yu Hakusho, especially since I love HxH so much. And I was the dragged partner in watching Fruits Basket, since it's not my usual type, but I thought it was actually really good! A bit too many characters since I watched it week-to-week every season, so I kept forgetting side characters' names, but that's it.

You've given me some new ones to add to my list! Cowboy Bebop is da shit. So classic and still good. The live action version was just sad though, unfortunately. Same thing with Fullmetal Alchemist. Great anime, another one I forgot to mention, but the live-action version was hot garbage. The acting was just dreadful.
-
@AGreaterMonster I guess I'm too pessimistic since I haven't given any recent anime live-action adaptations a chance. Last one I remember watching was Dragonball Evolution and I think it's the reason why I said "never again" (I probably saw it in very close proximity to the Avatar: The Last Airbender adaptation movie, so it was insult + injury)
-
Ergo Proxy is one of my favorite animes of all time, only second to Boogiepop Phantom. I'm really excited to see all the love for it here, you almost never hear it mentioned! As far as 90s/00s anime I also really love Magic Knight Rayearth, Inuyasha, Tenchi Muyo!, and Outlaw Star.
Fruits Basket is SO cute, I haven't watched the new one yet, only the old one. And of course, Cowboy Bebop is a classic.
It seems hard to adapt anime into live action, but I have hope we'll get a good one someday π₯²

I just started watching an anime called Heavenly Delusion on Hulu. Its a post dystopian world story, it seems good so far but I'm one episode in since its airing like a regular show and not all at once.
-
@Kismet That sounds interesting--I just searched for it on HULU and couldn't find it. Are you sure that's the title? Or is it on a different channel?
-
@AGreaterMonster whoops it looks like thats not technically the name on Hulu... its this one!
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt22817632/ -
@Kismet Oh yeah, nice. I added that one already, but I'm going to wait until the full season is released. I can't stand to wait! Do you know how many episodes there will be?
-
I have a couple others in sight like Hell's Paradise, Heavenly Delusion, My Home Hero and Dead Mount Death Play, but I don't want to overcommit, so I'll probably wait until I see good reviews or get a personal recommendation.
@Kismet Nice! I'll consider this a bump for Heavenly Delusion then! I'll probably also then watch it week to week
-
@AGreaterMonster I'm not sure yet! It doesnt look like IMDB has that info either, since its based on a Manga im guessing it would have 15-20 episodes unless they are planning on cutting stuff?
-
@Kismet That would be great. But it seems like itβs so common now with contemporary anime that they only make 12 episodes in a season. The ones with 24 or more episodes in a season seem to be the exception these days.
-
@AGreaterMonster @Kismet Heavenly Delusion will be one-cour only (13 episodes) just airing over Spring.
If it gets a bit of popularity (as it seems to be getting, week-to-week), maybe the next season could be two cours; the manga has 5 years' worth of content so I think the only limitation is monetary.
